SALUTATIONS FROM SHAWN

While it is still the Season of Lent, when we practice spiritual disciplines that lead us away from sin to God, we know Easter joy will soon be ours.  We have a distinct advantage over Jesus’ disciples.  After years of following Jesus, placing all of their hope of the restoration of Israel in him, the disciples felt despair and fear after his death on the cross.  Captured by doubt, they were lost in defeat and negativity.

God is not about negativity.  From the beginning, God called creation “good”.  Through covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and Jeremiah, God continually extended grace, hope, faithfulness, and love. Through these covenant agreements, God promised repeatedly to be a God of salvation, if people would worship and honor God alone.

When humans failed to understand the full meaning of these covenants and broke them repeatedly, God tried again.  God sent Jesus Christ into the world as a new covenant, a covenant of flesh and bone written on the heart, that we might know God will forgive our iniquities and remember our sin no more.  (Jeremiah 31:34)

All of us are familiar with the words of John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that God gave the only Son, so that everyone who believes in the Son may not perish but may have eternal life.”  The words that follow, in John 3:17, are just as important:  “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved.”

On the day of resurrection, two of Jesus’ followers walked on the road to Emmaus accompanied by a stranger.  Trapped in the grief they had experienced at the death of Jesus, they could not understand the stories they heard of Jesus appearing alive to others so they left Jerusalem for their home.  As evening arrived, the stranger broke bread with them and they suddenly recognized Jesus.  Although they had watched him die on the cross, he now appeared in their presence alive.  Their despair and doubt were transformed into hope: Christ had risen indeed!  (Luke 24:13-35)

God’s plan for us is to save us, from ourselves, from our sins, from our doubts, from our negativity, and even from death.  This is the Easter good news, glorious news that we can celebrate every day of the year as we live in the light of Christ, freed from fear of a meaningless life and a permanent death.  God’s covenant promise is so very, very good.  Christ is risen!  Alleluia!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Shawn

BIBLE STUDY

Tuesdays at 10 AM and 7 PM

We are reading through the Books of the Bible and have reached 1 and 2 Kings, where we find the stories of the kings of Israel and Judah who followed King David.  As the Life Application Bible explains, “The once great nation of Israel turned into a land divided, not only physically, but also spiritually.”  This is a very informal gathering as we explore the meaning of the scriptures for our lives today.  People are welcome to drop in for one or more sessions as their schedules permit.  If you have questions, please talk to Pastor Shawn.

CHILDREN’S WORSHIP

“Jesus Christ is Alive”

Sundays in April and May during Worship

Jesus Christ is risen from the dead!  Alleluia!  For this rest of spring, Children’s Worship will focus on the stories of Jesus’ appearance to his disciples after his resurrection. Children’s Worship is held on those Sundays when we have traditional and blended worship.  When contemporary worship is offered, typically on the last Sunday of the month, children are invited to participate in worship with the rest of the congregation.

EASTER EGG HUNT

Sunday, April 8, 9:30 AM

Children (and their parents and grandparents) are invited to gather in the Kline Room Easter Sunday between 9 and 10 AM for refreshments and Easter Activities.  An Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 9:30 AM.  Based on the ages of the children in attendance, two or three groups of children will be formed for the Easter Egg Hunt.

What is Easter?

The Easter Season begins on Easter Sunday, stretching to Pentecost Sunday 50 days later.  The season is devoted to telling the good news of the empty tomb found Easter Sunday as the disciples learned of Christ’s resurrection.  Although Jesus’ followers knew death was final, in the weeks following Easter they would meet the risen Christ time and again, as he taught them of God’s unending love.  Suddenly their doubts and fears were gone, as they realized death and sin were defeated.

In the early church, newly baptized Christians were taught about Jesus so they could find Christ in their daily lives.  As they had never met Jesus in person, they grew in faith as they heard from people who had seen Jesus, as we do today through the stories found in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.

Christ is revealed in wonderful ways each day of our lives, if we learn to see.  During the Season of Easter, we announce our joy and our belief that Christ is alive by clothing the church in colors of white and gold.  White represents the purity and goodness of Christ while gold symbolizes his royalty, for he is king in our lives.

As we celebrate, we recognize the risen Jesus where he is to be found: right with us, in our stories, when we eat together, and worship together—and as we faithfully tell others Jesus Christ is in the world.

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES

Pine Grove Disaster Relief                                                        April 23-27

People in Pine Grove are still feeling the impact of last fall’s devastating floods.  Local churches and organizations are planning a work week April 23-27 to help with Pine Grove disaster relief.  Churches are coming from North Carolina to aid in the effort.  For additional information, please talk to Pastor Shawn.

EVANGELISM

Today the number one reason people come to church is because someone personally invited them.  They keep coming because they were warmly welcomed and developed friendships at church.

Please consider inviting new disciples of Christ to join First Church as we journey through a life full of promise and trial toward the cross, where we find God’s forgiveness and new life through Christ’ resurrection.  Our services during Holy Week would be a wonderful time to invite friends as they tell The Story that is the very basis for our faith.

Welcoming Guests

Research indicates that up to 80% of young people under the age of 18 have never attended church.  Not everyone who comes to our church for worship may know how to behave in church.  It may be their first visit to church in a long time or their first visit ever.

As their hosts, we want to extend every courtesy to our guests, even if it means overlooking inappropriate dress or behavior.  There’s an old expression, “When you invite a stranger into your home, you invite them to be strange.”  Of course, it is God who invites people in the church, God’s home.  God made all of us in our uniqueness, each one of us a beloved child of God.

MENSCH MILL

2012 Camp Brochures & Calendars and information on other opportunities that Mensch Mill will offer throughout the coming year can be found in the Narthex.  These are programs that both enrich the individual and enhance the wider church community, and they are just one part of the total ministry offered at Mensch Mill.

New camp programs for the 2012 camp season include a weekend event, Camp Is For Everyone, H2O Camp, Hogwarts Camp, and a Canoe Trip for high school seniors and young adults.  Also new this year is a modified camp schedule.  This year’s theme, Secrets of the Kingdom will explore the parables that Jesus used to teach the word.  Following the tradition of oral teaching, campers will discover that the words of Jesus’ teachings still have relevance in their daily lives in the modern setting.  Camps begin June 29 and run through August 2.

First UCC will cover half of the cost for camps for children and youth.  Talk to Pastor Shawn for more information.
